Great design is responsive; it proposes instinctive solutions to everyday problems while enhancing our lived experiences. As we evolve our urban environments and systems, we require spaces and furniture that nurture and provide comfort, utility and performance.

For over 100 years, Herman Miller has met this set of challenges. As pioneers in modern and contemporary furniture, their pieces prioritise quality and durability, focusing on impact and resonance. Merging mid-century modern aesthetics with cutting-edge ergonomics, the advanced yet simple design of their Zeph chair highlights the company's commitment to high-quality performance seating and craftsmanship. So too does the Passport Work Table, which is lightweight and height-adjustable for both sitting and standing options. Both pieces are essential for those looking to elevate their work or office space.

Studio Nine Architects Director Mandy Goehr, whose refined aesthetics have influenced some of Australia's most exceptional residential and commercial venues, sat down with Union to shed light on the pieces’ design appeal and versatility.

Founded in 1998, the Adelaide-based architecture and design studio understands why it is important to create receptive commercial and residential environments. Goehr explains, “Post-pandemic, there have been some really interesting observations from people returning to work and study from home. More than before, we have noticed that consistency, comfort and familiarity are significant design pillars.”

“I particularly like the fact that the Passport Work Table moves with you!” Goehr reflects. “Its adaptable, lightweight and looks good in the space. I think it will be well received in the tertiary education space.” The individual desk comes in two sizes and is available on either casters or gliders for adaptable workspaces. Its design allows for easy reconfiguration, ensuring people “feel motivated and are able to work in a healthy way.” The Zeph chair, on the other hand, is “cute and not too serious. It will suit a variety of applications and people.”

Herman Miller is known for strong, long-lasting and to the point design. What these pieces offer, Goehr explains, “is reliability and practicality, while also adapting to the needs of the individual.”
